Steve Brown

DESIGN DIRECTOR

Steve has spent the past thirty years honing his skills in the lighting design field. He fell into lighting at a young age after deciding not to pursue an earlier dream of becoming an architect. He occasionally wonders at what that alternative career path might have led to… probably back to lighting.

When not listening to XTC or Frank Zappa, he has a second career as a writer and historian, with three books either published or about to be. All of this tends to be crammed between his activities as a Board member of the IALD, and sometime presenter at conferences.

Derrick Edwards

NSW Studio Manager – Associate

Derrick realised his passion in lighting through a mixture of architectural and engineering studies. He relishes finding solutions to realise ideas while balancing imagination with pragmatism.

When Derrick isn’t thinking about light he’ll no doubt either be active in the beautiful Sydney weather or trawling through music like it is going out of style. Although his daughter has an influential hand on his extracurricular activities, he is determined she’ll be a keen stand-up paddle-boarder and have a music appreciation that extends past the Wiggles. His daughter is all of two years-old, but he is laying the groundwork…

Lauren Lever

UK Studio Manager – Senior Lighting Designer

Lauren enjoys living the high life; you’ll find her in the most luxurious yachts, hotels and restaurants of the world. Whilst she would prefer to be the one relaxing and watching the world go by, you will find Lauren looking at the finer details ensuring that every aspect in lighting is perfect.

Lauren’s philosophy for lighting design is to develop innovative lighting schemes that complement the building’s form and function to create that unique atmosphere and identity. She refuses to accept bad lighting as it’s something that everyone notices and spoils the best of schemes, but a good harmony of lighting and interior/architecture is a job well done.

Kate is constantly being encouraged to keep her appointments with her physiotherapist to ensure she doesn’t end up with severe neck problems in her old age from starting at the ceiling, and to wear sunglasses indoors to avoid blindness from staring into bring lights and lighting samples.

Nicholas Burnham

Victorian Studio Manager – SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Nick likes long walks in the park, the colour tangerine and running in slow-motion along the beach, ideally to a Kenny G soundtrack. One of his aims in life is to save the dolphins.

He is looking for a long-term relationship with a light fitting he can respect and respects him. It must be full of energy, be of radiant personality and generally be bright. Dull, dim, light fittings need not apply.

Aviva Gunzburg

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Aviva is known for her propensity to look up. Stars, clouds, forest views, and that crashing noise the kids just made all capture her attention. When not gazing up or organizing a child labour clean up committee, she can be found feeding her scientific interests and performing food experiments in the kitchen.

Aviva’s philosophy for lighting design is that a good lighting design is not noticed, people should simply enjoy the experience the space provides. Her arch-enemy is glare, which she designs out with rigour and her pet hate is injudicious use of colour-changing light. Lighting should always respect the context of the architecture it is illuminating.

Jean-Paul Kirkland

SENIOR LIGHTING DESIGNER

Jean-Paul (or JP, as most people call him) has five priorities in life; his children, his children, golf, and his children… Oh, and not to forget lighting design!

JP is our go-to guru on external and landscape projects, and sports projects. But he is equally at home on any lighting assignment, and combines a robust practical good sense with an excellent understanding of light and its application. When not on the golf course (or entertaining his kids) he can often be found wandering around project sites, lightmeter in hand, experiencing light’s eternal verities.

Alex Fergusson

Lighting Designer

Alex is generally in favour of light. It allows her to minimise the chance of stubbing her toe in the middle of the night and other such mishaps. Light can be functional, sculptural, subtle, bold, bright and dim. It brings life and can change your perception of a space.

When not contemplating light, Alex spends her time studying graphic design, reading Anthony Bourdain and planning what drastic colour to dye her hair next.
