NDY Director receives international award

19 Dec 2011

Norman Disney & Young (NDY) Director and industry expert Rowan Peck, has received an IEC1906 award from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for his role in developing the technical report IEC61439-0:2010 - Guide to specifying assemblies.

The easy to follow guide assists users in understanding and correctly applying the new series of Switchgear and Controlgear assembly standards. As part of an international working group, Peck was a key contributor in developing the basis for the guide and preparing the initial version for review and endorsement by the IEC committee responsible.

“The guide looks at the reasoning behind the various options available to the user when they are specifying a switchboard for a particular application or project,” says Peck.

“The guide was conceived as a way to satisfy the desire of several IEC member countries to make the standard more accessible to users.

“It summarises the decision points around various technical requirements, without the need for users to be completely familiar with the methods by which those requirements are achieved.”

Choices around switchboard performance requirements are presented in a standard recipe checklist, which draws from experience of French and German manufacturers to simplify the specifier’s role in selecting the right product for their needs.

Peck commented that in the past 10 years productivity and globalisation have driven technical advances, and consequently switchboards have been influenced.

“The growing push to get more for less has generated a need for increasingly complex standards to describe the requirements of products like switchboards,” says Peck.

“As this complexity grows, the challenges grow for less technically informed users to understand what the performance requirements they are asking for actually mean.

“Users of the guide don’t need to be familiar with the main standard. It follows the structure of similar guides developed for other standards applications of this type, but explores in greater depth the technical considerations behind the choices available to end users.

“Importantly, the award highlights the in-house expertise that has lead to NDY’s reputation as a leading engineering consultancy.”
