Stadium a gold winner for NDY

03 Dec 2011

A total of five Norman Disney & Young (NDY) projects were shortlisted for the prestigious 2011 annual Consult Australia Awards for Excellence held at the Sydney Town Hall on Friday 2nd December.

But it was the rectangular stadium in Melbourne (AAMI Park) which delivered NDY with the highest accolade: a Gold Award of Merit in the Building (non-residential) category.

The Gold Award was shared with project team partner Arup and is the latest in a plethora of awards for the stadium.

NDY Melbourne Director and Project Coordinator for the stadium, Michael Priest, says the Gold Award is recognition of a truly successful collaboration.

“Along with NDY, the entire AAMI Park project team of Arup, Cox Architects and Planners, Grocon & Major Projects Victoria, delivered a world-class stadium through the application of innovative design and technical excellence,” Priest says.

“Clever design resulted in a bioframe roof that uses 50 per cent less steel than traditional structural solutions. NDY provided the engineering services for the stadium including: mechanical and building automation; electrical; communications; security, Audio Visual; Sports Lighting; fire protection; fire engineering; lifts; hydraulics; and Sustainability (ESD) services.”

Nestled within the inner city sporting district of Melbourne – which is also home to the MCG, Olympic Park Stadium and Rod Laver Arena – AAMI Park provides the missing link in Melbourne’s sporting requirements for a medium size, purpose-built rectangular code stadium.

This is the second consecutive year that NDY has won a Gold Award at the Consult Australia Awards, with NDY taking out the 2010 Building (non-residential) Gold Award of Merit for its work on the ANZ Centre in the Melbourne Docklands.

According to Consult Australia, the record field of entries for the Awards reflects world-class standards of quality, skills and client service delivery.
