Medibank Fitout, 720 Bourke Street, Melbourne, Australia

Client: Medibank

Architect: Hassell/KPDO/Russell & George/Chris Connell Design

About the project

The Medibank fitout at 720 Bourke Street was designed to provide a new highly sustainable Activity Based Working (ABW) facility for the health insurance provider. With multiple different staff, customer and client spaces the lighting needed to be carefully designed to respond to each environment dependant on its visual, functional and ABW work-setting type.

The tenancy was designed as an integrated process with the base building. All base building lighting was replaced with less ‘office’ orientated lighting solutions. Staff breakout with track lighting provides working light to informal meeting zones, and a ribbon of cove light separates this space from the atrium zone with more formal enclosed meeting and kitchen spaces lit by LED downlights and linear profiles.

The open plan areas are illuminated with suspended direct/indirect lighting, highlighting the different colour treatment to each floor and providing working light. Localised open collaboration and meeting spaces within this area have variable lighting solutions ranging from pendants to linear LED lighting. Lighting to the Level 6 ‘Plaza’ space was designed to respond to the different environments created by four collaborating interior designers.
