Rail Systems, Tunnels and Underground Stations

NDY can address the full range of services associated with underground railway facilities: power, communications, fire, environment and ventilation.

Fire and life safety, power systems reliability, and communications adequacy and reliability are the key issues to be addressed.

Fire and life safety issues have assumed a high level of importance. Fire services and associated mechanical and electrical services address situations of low probability occurrence but high-risk consequence if an event occurs.

Risk evaluation and fire and life safety must consider a wide spectrum of issues including rolling stock, operations and procedures, human factors, fire prevention, containment, detection and suppression measures, smoke control, monitoring and alarms, evacuation procedures and emergency services procedures.

Engineering evaluation is of major importance in considering the issues and determining an appropriate scheme for implementation. Sophisticated simulation and computation programs are now available to assist in the engineering evaluation process.

Rigorous analysis of cost, benefit, risk and human interface needs to be applied to develop scheme implementation policy, criteria of performance and outcomes and to establish appropriate and acceptable design criteria for all systems and components.

Road Systems and Vehicle Tunnels

NDY can address the full range of services associated with road systems and vehicle tunnels: power, communications, fire, environment and ventilation.

Fire and life safety, lighting for driving safety and environment quality control are the key issues to be addressed.

Detailed engineering evaluation of tunnel ventilation and external emissions have become of increasing significance, as internal air quality and visibility goals and external environmental consideration become more onerous.

Major tunnel fires have been rare occurrences, however, the potential for entrapment and injury for large numbers of people requires special consideration.

Risk evaluation and an effective program for fire and life safety depends on the coordinated interaction of various services. These services include detection, alarm, incident location, communication, smoke control (ventilation), fire suppression, evacuation and electrical power supplies.

Water Technology

NDY can address the full range of services associated with water and waste water plants - power, controls, communications, fire, environment and ventilation.

Water treatment/processing plants - whether for potable/clean water supply and/or purification, or for trade waste/sewerage - are required to provide a very high level of availability, reliability and serviceability, over a long period of plant operating life.

Redundancy in provision of equipment items is often required to achieve these criteria.

Understanding the Project Needs

There are issues critical to most infrastructure project engineering services that must be addressed in addition to conventional design issues:

  • Reliability Criteria
  • Performance Criteria
  • Environment Control
  • Technology Change within system life
  • Occupational Health and Safety, Fire and Life safety
  • Control, Monitoring and Alarms
  • Emergency Services Procedures
