Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia

Client: Bovis Lend Lease

Architect: Billard Leece, Bates Smart and HKS Inc

Called ‘The Hospital in the Park,’ The Royal Children’s Hospital is a place of fun for parents, staff and children; a place of comfort during times of anxiety and an environment that sustains the family bond at times of disruption and dislocation. The integration of a children’s hospital in a park was fundamental to the siting of the building, the distribution of departments, orientation and sculpting of the site. This enables distant views in every direction, just as there are gardens in every direction.

NDYLIGHT was engaged as part of the NDY project team for the new $1 billion hospital delivered as a PPP under the State Government’s Partnerships Victoria model, and one of the largest hospital projects undertaken in Australia.

It is Australia’s first 5 star Green Star hospital, with a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas through the use of energy efficient lighting, cooling and heating.
