State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia

Client: State Library of Victoria

Architect: Lovell Chen

The State Library Victoria engaged NDYLIGHT in 2011 to design a new LED-based lighting solution to the heritage-listed western facade. The previous installation, from the 1990s, had reached the end of its useful life and was in need of replacement. As part of this process NDYLIGHT revisited the overall design of the lighting to the facade, including the western facade and how this wrapped around the corners on Latrobe and Little Lonsdale Streets, as well as the returns on the North and South Towers.

The final outcome is a smooth, fully controllable facade installation. The lighting control system allows the installation to be programmed to remain a beautiful warm white or change automatically to any colour the Library requires to suit an event, sponsor, date or season. Furthermore, the system is designed to allow independent control by third parties for events.
