New Bendigo Hospital, Bendigo, Australia

Client: Lendlease

Architect: Silver Thomas Hanley / Bates Smart / Oculus

The new Bendigo Hospital project is Australia’s first world-class regional hospital. At 372 beds this new hospital is about 60% larger than the previous facility with expanded capacity to include an integrated regional cancer centre and a new psychiatric inpatient facility.

NDYLIGHT was appointed by the Victorian Government as part of the successful Exemplar Health consortium to design, build and operate the new hospital.

The project required collaboration with the building architects (Bates Smart + Silver Thomas Hanley) and landscape architects (Oculus) to meet the challenges set by the Brief. Internally, the main atrium required significant integration with the daylighting, as well as considering the building and landscape as an integrated whole. The landscape is drawn internally in order to create inner sanctuaries of tranquility.

We needed to consider higher levels of safety and security required in the mental health unit, as well as significant safety in design considerations for people with limited mobility. Other factors included  complex user group, client and consultant engagement, access and maintenance and a 25 year design life.
