Steve Brown

DIRECTOR, NDYLIGHT

Steve has spent the past thirty years honing his skills in the lighting design field. He fell into lighting at a young age after deciding not to pursue an earlier dream of becoming an architect. He occasionally wonders at what that alternative career path might have led to… probably back to lighting.

When not listening to XTC or Frank Zappa, he has a second career as a writer and historian, with three books either published or about to be. All of this tends to be crammed between his activities as a Board member of the IALD, and sometime presenter at conferences.

Nicholas Burnham

DESIGN PRINCIPAL – SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Nick likes long walks in the park, the colour tangerine and running in slow-motion along the beach, ideally to a Kenny G soundtrack. One of his aims in life is to save the dolphins.

He is looking for a long-term relationship with a light fitting he can respect and respects him. It must be full of energy, be of radiant personality and generally be bright. Dull, dim, light fittings need not apply.

David Gilbey

LONDON STUDIO MANAGER – HEAD OF CREATIVE LIGHTING

David is a luvvie, originally from the UK theatre lighting industry and hence feels his shirts should be viewed from behind sunglasses. He is getting on a bit but has never managed to supress the inner child which invariably makes him the youngest person in the room at any meeting. David believes in the power of ideas and coming from the theatre looks for the narrative in a project, he also believes that the limiter to creativity on a project is not the budget but the ideas. David has a proud portfolio of prestigious lighting projects all over the globe.

David believes his work is more important than his title and would sooner just have his name on his business card, that said he negotiated hard for his fancy title taking less money for such grandeur, though in truth he would have preferred Lighting Guru! David sings while he works and admires greatly the patience of the team that work around him, you have to work with a smile on your face. David lived in Italy for twelve years and speaks Italian like a Spanish cow. David is a fish. David has a dog called Bookie and a wife called Angel.

Glen Thompson

SYDNEY STUDIO MANAGER

After doing his time on the tools as a CAD operator, Glen was hit by a beam of light in Church and found a new passion for Lighting. He jumped ship to the design world, he loves light and how it can help him find his beers as well as its power to transform Architecture.

He is a firm believer “that the devil is the detail” and has a strong understanding of the what, where and how in his designs. He takes lighting catalogues to bed with him and is known by his colleagues as the “human catalogue” he can immediately identify what to use and which manufacturer makes the right luminaire for any application.

He prefers to wear all black and keep his beard in excellent condition.

In his spare time, Glen loves to cook spicy food paired with weird and wonderful craft beers that can be found at his local breweries of the inner west. He also enjoys park play dates with his Italian wife and Italian Greyhounds Luna & Biggie.

No, he is not the younger Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Kate Conway

NZ STUDIO MANAGER – SENIOR LIGHTING DESIGNER

After taking a tumble and breaking a leg, Kate somehow landed in lighting. Now fully back on her feet Kate is a dedicated member of the team, when not hanging from the ceiling focusing lights.

Beware she is technically savvy, ready test everyone’s LED knowledge to the limits and holds the unofficial world record for most correct technical LED data questions answered at trivia nights. Kate is constantly being encouraged to keep her appointments with her physiotherapist to ensure she doesn’t end up with severe neck problems in her old age from starting at the ceiling, and to wear sunglasses indoors to avoid blindness from staring into bring lights and lighting samples.

Aviva Gunzburg

SENIOR LIGHTING DESIGNER

Aviva is known for her propensity to look up. Stars, clouds, forest views, and that crashing noise the kids just made all capture her attention. When not gazing up or organizing a child labour clean up committee, she can be found feeding her scientific interests and performing food experiments in the kitchen.

Aviva’s philosophy for lighting design is that a good lighting design is not noticed, people should simply enjoy the experience the space provides. Her arch-enemy is glare, which she designs out with rigour and her pet hate is injudicious use of colour-changing light. Lighting should always respect the context of the architecture it is illuminating.

Sharbel Dammo

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Sharbel thinks of light the way he thinks about coffee, it can be bold, delicate, striking, smooth and when done badly, bitter.

His fascination with light was sparked during his studies, the realisation that light can evoke emotion and change a person’s perception of a space was intriguing.

Sharbel likes to spend his spare time with his family, watching the formula 1, wondering when TOOL will be releasing their new album and café hopping, tasting some of the best the coffee capital of the world has to offer.

Giulia Brighi

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Giulia has a background in architecture and like many lighting designers found the light and headed straight to it. Giulia is Italian and consequently has their flare and passion, for life, for architecture, for LIGHT. The London NDYLIGHT team use Julia with a G as a secret weapon to diffuse tricky situations such is the sunshine she brings to a room.

Giulia has a quest to find decent Italian food in London, the London team are very happy to share this quest. She worked for a famous lighting manufacturer in Italy and they would not give her one of their beautiful umbrellas as they are for key people. Giulia is now a key person and has one of the red beauties to keep her hair dry and feels as independent lighting designers it is our mission in life to explore all lighting manufacturers umbrellas, she’s like a modern day Mary Poppins. Giulia’s favourite animal is a gorilla. Giulia has been forced to drink English Tea to fit more readily in the UK lighting design community and is happily taking this hit for the team. Giulia is very patient. Giulia is being introduced slowly to ‘British humour’ and is a late convert to Only Fools and Horses, we are wondering if Monty Python is a step too far.

Danielle Bird

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Danielle loves all things light. The feeling of doing a grand jeté, watching birds fly, underwater photography and reading in hammocks.

All of which successfully make her feel light as a cloud.

She also loves that other light. The one that creates mystery and enchantment, that frames everything we see in life. How when controlled with skill creates a space so delightful, that we couldn’t imagine it existing any other way. Danielle thinks that light and beauty make a good team much like NDYLIGHT.
