Steve Brown

DIRECTOR, NDYLIGHT

Steve has spent the past thirty years honing his skills in the lighting design field. He fell into lighting at a young age after deciding not to pursue an earlier dream of becoming an architect. He occasionally wonders at what that alternative career path might have led to… probably back to lighting.

When not listening to XTC or Frank Zappa, he has a second career as a writer and historian, with three books either published or about to be. All of this tends to be crammed between his activities as a Board member of the IALD, and sometime presenter at conferences.

Queena Chiu

DESIGN PRINCIPAL

Queena fell in love with architecture and lighting design at young age. She considers herself fortunate to have worked with top tier consultancies and on high profile projects, throughout her career.

Outside of work it might be difficult to find her! In the past 13 years she’s relocated internationally 7 times! She loves traveling and takes much of her inspiration from nature and cultural diversity. She’s a fair weather hiker but given the British weather it may be easier to find her in her favourite bootcamp gym! Failing that, she’s probably on FaceTime with her young nephew who she has nicknamed “burger”!

Kate Conway

NZ STUDIO MANAGER – SENIOR LIGHTING DESIGNER

After taking a tumble and breaking a leg, Kate somehow landed in lighting. Now fully back on her feet Kate is a dedicated member of the team, when not hanging from the ceiling focusing lights.

Beware she is technically savvy, ready test everyone’s LED knowledge to the limits and holds the unofficial world record for most correct technical LED data questions answered at trivia nights. Kate is constantly being encouraged to keep her appointments with her physiotherapist to ensure she doesn’t end up with severe neck problems in her old age from starting at the ceiling, and to wear sunglasses indoors to avoid blindness from staring into bring lights and lighting samples.

Nicholas Burnham

DESIGN PRINCIPAL – SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Nick likes long walks in the park, the colour tangerine and running in slow-motion along the beach, ideally to a Kenny G soundtrack. One of his aims in life is to save the dolphins.

He is looking for a long-term relationship with a light fitting he can respect and respects him. It must be full of energy, be of radiant personality and generally be bright. Dull, dim, light fittings need not apply.

Aviva Gunzburg

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Aviva is known for her propensity to look up. Stars, clouds, forest views, and that crashing noise the kids just made all capture her attention. When not gazing up or organizing a child labour clean up committee, she can be found feeding her scientific interests and performing food experiments in the kitchen.

Aviva’s philosophy for lighting design is that a good lighting design is not noticed, people should simply enjoy the experience the space provides. Her arch-enemy is glare, which she designs out with rigour and her pet hate is injudicious use of colour-changing light. Lighting should always respect the context of the architecture it is illuminating.

Sharbel Dammo

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Sharbel thinks of light the way he thinks about coffee, it can be bold, delicate, striking, smooth and when done badly, bitter.

His fascination with light was sparked during his studies, the realisation that light can evoke emotion and change a person’s perception of a space was intriguing.

Sharbel likes to spend his spare time with his family, watching the formula 1, wondering when TOOL will be releasing their new album and café hopping, tasting some of the best the coffee capital of the world has to offer.

Danielle Bird

LIGHTING DESIGNER

Danielle loves all things light. The feeling of doing a grand jeté, watching birds fly, underwater photography and reading in hammocks.

All of which successfully make her feel light as a cloud.

She also loves that other light. The one that creates mystery and enchantment, that frames everything we see in life. How when controlled with skill creates a space so delightful, that we couldn’t imagine it existing any other way. Danielle thinks that light and beauty make a good team much like NDYLIGHT.
